Part #5: Finale and Weekly Summary 15

*I forgot that I had to do all of this in one single blog post and by the time I finished my third part of my project, it was too late. So I’m going to combine my finale (Part 5) and my weekly summary into this post, as well as the previous four parts I did in order.*

The story starts out with Popeye and him promoting his favorite thing ever, spinach. Spinach gives him the power and strength to overwhelm his enemies and makes him unstoppable. He actually runs a worldwide spinach company that provides for every nation on Earth.

Popeye’s fame and power would not last forever though. Spinach supplies would slowly decrease and Popeye would not notice it until it was too late. By the time Popeye got around and trying to address the issue, farmers around the world have had enough with consumers pushing them to their outmost limits, especially Popeye. The farmers stated that  the constant demand and persistence and their reasonings of not being able to produce enough was their reason in protesting. Violence is a very possible outcome if demands are not met. Arguably, it could be said that Popeye was accounted for the majority percentage of consumption of overall spinach in the world. Global news outlets have already begun reporting this situation, such as CNN.

Even with all of this going on, Popeye refused to resort to any form of action in an attempt to clear his name or to fix the many problems that are occurring. Granted, he’s not the world police, but at least he could have made some form of effort to help ease a lot of the tensions going on around him. As a result of this, all of the world’s leaders (or those present at the recent United Nations’ conference), agreed to file a lawsuit against Popeye himself. The Supreme Court of the United Nations deemed Popeye’s lack of actions during a critical period astonishing and unacceptable.

They awaited several months for a response from Popeye until many leaders agreed that enough was enough. They all issued bounties and wanted posters throughout their respective countries, hoping to capture Popeye and end his greedy lifestyle. The lack of a response fueled this decision and enraged many.

Regarding Popeye’s future after these terrible moments, it was rumored he was hiding in his secret hideout somewhere in jungles Brazil, along with the rest of the spinach that was left. Turns out, he had built a underground complex so that only him and some of his most trusted advisors only knew the true location and had access too. He had arrived and has lived there right being filed an injunction against, probably deeming that he doesn’t care about what other people think. Once his spinach supply was all gone, he went crazy and into a deep depression and betrayed all his close advisors by poisoning them.

As for final weekly summary of this semester, there was a lot going on this year. It had its ups and downs, this class, and honestly, I learned a great deal of material and techniques each week. This class has made me much more confident in using lots of different software and applications to help me create various digital assignments. I was familiar with some of the techniques and technology that I needed to use for this class, but I did not know I would become this comfortable with them by semester’s end.

This particular week was actually pretty fun, and it has been while where a week was enjoyable to say the least. The only tough part about this week’s project was coming up with ideas, but other than that, everything else was pretty simple and fun. I basically had to choose any type of character I thought was significant enough for this particular assignment, and I ended up choosing Popeye the Sailor and his beginning and demise through his favorite food, spinach.

My final thoughts regarding this class are that I really enjoyed the majority of the semester but at times I was just so annoyed and frustrated with some assignments because of my unfamiliarity and toughness of specific assignments. However, I managed to pull myself through these obstacles, and even though I didn’t get grades I wanted, I was happy with myself that I was able to create something other than nothing, and I learned a lot about certain applications such as iMovie, using Pixlr, etc. This class at times made me stressed because I was already taking four math classes on top of the workload for this class and being a math major while taking this was sometimes overwhelming to say the least. Other than that however, I enjoyed this class and I am grateful I learned all these techniques that I can possibly use in my near future.

I wasn’t sure if I was allowed to post my blog links or not, since I originally did separate posts for each part of my story. However, I thought it would be safe to just link my posts because they also explain how I created and did my media pieces and I felt like it would be best if I shared my techniques and strategies I used. Since I’m so used to explaining how I did my assignments throughout this semester, I thought it wouldn’t hurt to share the posts I created explaining said explanations on my work.

Part One – Promotion Poster

Part Two – Edited website using X-Ray Goggles

Part Three – My creation of an injunction letter

Part Four – Wanted Poster

I also tagged the appropriate assignments I used in those parts, but I’ll go ahead and tag them here as well.

Part #4: Fugitive

As we move closer towards the end of this story, Popeye finds himself on the run and a wanted fugitive of all major federal law enforcement agencies. With this thought in mind, I thought it would be appropriate to use the “WANTED Poster” assignment as a basis for this post.

Since Popeye refuses to confront the many arising issues regarding the spinach shortage and allegations regarding his consumption of spinach all just for himself, the world has issued a wanter poster towards Popeye himself. The assignment provided with a poster generator, which was very useful in helping me create what I wanted.

Here is what my work space looked like:

And here is what my finished product looks like:

As you can see, the world really wants Popeye to be put to justice, as they believe he has caused significant damage throughout the world’s economies and cause widespread outrage about his handling of the situation.

Part #3: Refusal to Confront Issues/Legal Problems

The next chapter of this adventure revolves around Popeye’s refusal in answering the world’s questions about the global crisis regarding spinach shortages. I searched into the vast areas of the assignment bank, and I finally found one that I thought was appropriate enough for my theme. It is called “Cartoons on Trial“, where I basically have to create legal document based on a cartoon character’s actions. Now since there wasn’t any examples given, I had to look up on google for a example and here is what I conjured up to the best of my ability. I typed out the legal document on Microsoft Word:

Despite the crisis, Popeye failed to understand the significance and severity of this situation, and it is starting to come back and bite him. Hopefully, he has a plan to help relieve him of all these allegations and charges being brought upon him.

Part #2: Major Problem

In Popeye’s next part of his adventure, he encounters a major obstacle that was shaped in the form of a web assignment. How dangerous right? The web assignment that immediately came into my mind is the “Storytelling Within the Web” and revisiting this assignment provided some great creativity for me.

For this assignment, I had to revisit the X-Ray Goggles, which I had a really fun time playing with the last time I used it. This was my main tool in editing my chosen webpage to match my project’s theme and my specific situation Popeye is dealing with. Since I was already scrolling through CNN, I decided to go ahead and use the CNN website as my basis because I really liked the simplicity and style of the site. Other sites I visited were too complex and had way too many effects and unnecessary add-ons.

Here’s the original site:

And here is my edited version:

As you can see, there is a global spinach crisis where farmers have had enough with consumers pushing them to their outmost limits, especially Popeye. The farmers have had it with the constant demand and persistence and their reasonings of not being able to produce enough has gone way over the line. Violence is a very possible outcome if demands are not met. Arguably, it could be said that Popeye was accounted for the majority percentage of consumption of overall spinach in the world.

Part #1: The Promoter

For my final project, I decided to choose Popeye the Sailor as my central character. I used the “Advertisement Using a Cartoon Character” assignment for this post. Since I am using Popeye, I thought it would be fitting for him promoting/endorsing his favorite food, spinach.

I started off by finding two pictures, one of Popeye, and the other being a simple bag of spinach. I tried my best to neatly remove the can of spinach in the default Popeye picture and replaced it with the bag of spinach. This was very frustrating because my hands are not that study and I did not have a mouse with me, so I had to trace the edges using my trackpad. What a pain that was. I then implemented a text box into the finished edited photo. I did all my work through a website called Pixlr.

Again, it was difficult removing the little things that were noticeable in the pic, such as whitespace, etc. The picture above is my best effort I could conjure. I also could not figure out how to resize the bag of spinach so that it would fit in Popeye’s hands and muscles, so that is why there is a lot of yellow space in between, and I apologize for that.

Weekly Summary #11 and #12!

Whew what a two weeks these have been. Despite the seemingly small workload, these video assignments were a lot more difficult and annoying than I thought. But at the same time, I had fun with some actually and it was a great learning experience as usual with each passing week in this class. Overall, these two weeks were pretty painful for me.

I did my six daily creates, which can be view here.

The first assignment I did was the Vine It! one. I got the chance to finally use this very popular app on my iPhone. I basically recorded what my routine was for that Saturday.

The next assignment I did was the Play It Backwards assignment. For this, I simply recorded a toilet flushing and edited it around to make it play backwards through iMovie.

Then I moved on to work on the assignment of sending a message to my 16-year old self. This assignment was pretty simple and straight forward, and I had fun with it.

I also did the Connected Clips assignment, using Family Guy was my main theme. I combined five clips from Family Guy that involved Meg being abused by almost every character on the show. This was a pretty fun assignment as well, and I got a great laugh out it while doing it.

The last assignment I did was a sports team pump-up video, and I decided to use the Washington Capitals, a regional National Hockey League Team, as my sports team. This assignment was a tad difficult, but I was able to create a great video based on my second time using iMovie, ever.

Lastly, I had to do the required assignment, where I basically had a conversation with myself. Out of everything I had to do this year, this was the biggest nightmare of them all. I could go on and on about how bad this assignment was but that’s explained in the post.

Overall, these two weeks were a good learning experience, but quite annoying at times too. I especially enjoyed doing the sports team assignment, as well as the connected clips one, because I got to use some of my favorite things and incorporate them in a assignment. In the end, I’m just glad this week is finally over. Till next time folks!

Conversation with Myself

Original Assignment (5 Stars)

Out of every single assignment I had to do for this class, this annoyed, pissed, and irritated me the most because of how much I had to do just for this assignment. I am so glad I got this over with because editing the clips I recorded on iMovie was an absolute nightmare.

With the difficulties of editing the videos itself, the timing between each line for each of me had to be spot on and it took me several tries to match it up. Recording the video and audio itself wasn’t that difficult, it was just the compilation process to make it look like a real conversation that was the hard part. There were some discrepancies when I was cropping the videos, so to hide them, I simply made the video a purple’ish color, although it’s still kind of noticeable if you look closely.

I used iMovie once again for this assignment, and even with my familiarity with it doing previous assignments, I still had lots of trouble when I was this doing this particular assignment.

For my dialogue, I just simply talked to myself about the Colts and how we thought the team was doing and if we wanted to grab lunch soon somewhere around campus. To make sure we didn’t look exactly alike, my second self had a hoodie on to separate ourselves.

Here is my final product (try not to judge please):

Capitals Pump Up Video!

Original Assignment (4.5 Stars)

For my last video assignment, I decided to do the “Sports Team Pump-Up Video”. The team I decided to use was the Washington Capitals (yes, I realized a few people have already chosen this team for their assignment, but I felt like hockey is the best sport for a pump-up video). I really love watching hockey, and it provides a great amount of drama and stress, especially if you’re an avid Caps fan.

The site I used to download my youtube clips from is called SaveFrom and it easily allows me to download any youtube clip in the given quality options they offer. I used three clips for this assignment:

  1. Mike Green OT Goal vs NY Rangers
  2. Mike Ribeiro OT Goal vs NY Rangers
  3. Capitals 6-5 OT Victory over Detroit Red Wings

Importing the videos onto iMovie, which is the app I used for this assignment, took a little longer than I thought, considering the length of each video wasn’t too long in my opinion. Cutting and splicing specific parts of each video was a bit challenging, as I was still getting used to using iMovie, but I was able to figure it out soon enough and got the clips I wanted for this video. I had to tone the volume of each clip so that way, to the best I could, so that the background song I used was able to be heard, but not overpowering that it cancelled out the in-game commentary. For the song choice, I decided to go with Indestructible by Disturbed.

Here is what my work space looked like, with my edited work on the top left box and all my supporting work that I used on the bottom box:

And here is my final product:

Overall, I am really happy on how this all came out, and it really made me more familiar with iMovie. Despite the frustrations, I had a fun time doing this assignment actually.

Family Guy Connected Clips!

Original Assignment (4.5 Stars)

The next video assignment I decided to work on is the “Connected Clips” one. This initially was tough for me because I had a hard time deciding what show to do that had a good amount of reoccurring themes. Then I realized the show “Family Guy” was the perfect show to use for this assignment.

I chose Family Guy because it is one of my favorite shows and I have been watching it for several years now. For those of you that have seen this show numerous times, I’m sure you guys can come up with several reoccurring themes from each episode such as Cleveland falling out of his house when taking a bath, to Quagmire’s signature “Giggity” phrase. But for this assignment, I decided to use the reoccurring theme of Meg being abused by Peter and other characters throughout the show.

Here are the five clips that I used for this assignment (I didn’t want to embed each one because I didn’t want my blog post to be dominated by these five video clips):

I had to scale down all my videos to a 320 x 240 format because at my first attempt in compiling them, the videos all had separate sizes and had weird things going on in the background. Only then, I was able to compile all my videos in a smooth video.

Now all five of the above clips are relatively short, as they are just certain moments throughout a specific episode, so my final product is going to be relatively short as well. Here is my finished product:

My Daily Creates

My Safe Haven

I added a bit of humor aspect to this one, as I took a picture of my bathroom as part of my safe haven.

Geek Magnetic Poetry

I basically just dragged a bunch of random tiles together to form a simple question about playing a possible aliens and dragons droid program.

My Own Country’s Flag

Basically my country is going to revolve around the legend himself, Pacman.

I had to write a haiku here in somewhat of a sassy tone, going off of a smart alec perspective.

Open Web Beginnings

Throwback to when I had a myspace! This is where I first began my open web adventures.

Parking Ticket Poem

I wrote a poem about how a person would go through a situation of where he or she got caught parking in a wrong area and seeing the policeman writing the ticket.
